Dr. Cagan’s research laboratory focuses on a genetic and drug screening approach utilizing the fruitfly Drosophila that is targeting primarily at cancer and diabetes, including diabetic nephropathy.  The basic focus is to use the advantages of the fly to take a whole animal approach to disease.  Dr. Cagan’s integrated approach brings genes and drugs identified in research in the fly to rodent models and ultimately to clinical trials. Gene sequencing and histological data from humans are then brought back to the fly model to develop increasingly sophisticated tools.  Dr. Cagan has been a faculty member of the Mount Sinai School of Medicine since 1994.  He was educated at University of California, Los Angeles and received his Ph.D. from Princeton University.
