Grant Process Mechanism

Mechanism:

  1. Funds Available
    1. Post Doctoral Fellowship grant: maximum award $50,000 per year for two years to cover salary and benefits only. Fellow will utilize existing lab supplies and equipment in mentor’s laboratory. Not renewable.
    2. Young Investigator Career Development awards: $75,000 per year for three years to provide portion of investigator’s salary, technician’s salary, and supplies. Not renewable.
    3. Established Investigator grant: $100,000 per year for two years to provide portion of investigator’s salary, technician’s salary, and supplies. Possibly renewable.
  2. Allowable costs: Please note that these differ by grant type
    1. Post-Doctoral Fellowship
      1. Fellow’s salary and fringe benefits only
      2. Travel to one NephCure approved meeting per year (maximum allowed for travel, $1200
    2. Young Investigator Career Development Award
      1. PI, co-investigators, and technician salary and fringe benefit
      2. Supplies
      3. Travel to one NephCure approved meeting per year (maximum allowed for travel, $1200
    3. Established Investigator Gran
      1. PI, co-investigators, technician salaries and fringe benefit
      2. Supplies
      3. Travel to one NephCure approved meeting per year (maximum allowed for travel, $1200)
  3. No other expenses allowable on any grant
    1. No equipment expenses allowed (defined as computers or other equipment with a value greater than $1000)
  4. Indirect Costs: no institutional overhead will be funded 

 

Application Cycle Dates:

  1. Application due date is Wednesday, November 30, 2011: applications  must be received by 5 PM EST on this date; no extensions will be granted. Notification of receipt will be provided to applicant within 2 business days.
    1. Initial review date will be in January 2012
    2. Secondary review date will be in March 2012
    3. Award announcement will be in  May 2012: decision letter, and administrative details provided to applicant
    4. Project start date will be July 1, 2012 with the formal notice of award provided no later than 1 month prior to start.  The contract start date may be delayed until September 1, 2012 to account for administrative set-up, as no cost project extensions will only be considered under rare circumstances.

Proposal Guidelines

  1. Application Format:  Except where noted, applicants should use the NIH Form 398 application form and complete all items on indicated forms following the 398 form instructions - http://grants.nih.gov/grants/funding/phs398/phs398.html.
  2.  Each application must include:
    1. Cover sheet – click here for PDF
    2. Abstract/Summary of project (398 Form – page 2) – 500 words or less
    3. Research Plan
      1. Hypothesis and specific aims
      2. Background and significance
      3. Preliminary data
      4. Research design
      5. Literature cited
    4. (Page limits: For post-doctoral fellowship, sections 1-4: 3 page limit; for young investigator and established investigators, sections 1-4: 10 page limit. These page limits include figures and tables. Literature cited is not included in these limits.)
    5. Detailed budget (398 Form – page 4 and 5; a modular budget should not be used) – 1 page length limit
    6. Biographical sketch (398 Form) - 4 page limit
    7. Resources (398 Form)
    8. Statement as to why NephCure Foundation funding is essential to the execution of this project
    9. Personnel (please include current CVs)
    10. IRB approval and consent forms, or plan to obtain such approval, when applicable
    11. Statement detailing other grant support available, if applicable
    12. Proposed start and end dates, including relevant milestones over the course of the grant period
    13. Human studies (provide evidence of local IRB approval; may be provided just prior to issuance of notice of award)
    14. Vertebrate Animals (provide evidence of local IRB approval; may be provided just prior to issuance of notice of award
    15. Sharing plan: Awardees agree to share data and findings to instill broad collaboration. Details of any then existing sharing policy will be provided by NephCure prior to final award of the grant.
    16. Letters of support
      1. For Post-doctoral fellowship application
        1. From mentor detailing commitment, providing evidence of mentor’s training experience, and describing training plan;
        2. Letter of reference (1)
      2. For Young Investigator Career Development applications:
        1. From Chairman or Division Chief indicating independence, space allocation, and departmental financial suppor
        2. From post-doctoral mentor or another reference familiar with the applicant’s work and talen
        3. From Collaborators, if indicate
      3. For Established Investigator applications:
        1. For collaborations, unique reagents, etc.
    17. No appendix of any type permitte
    18. Formatting requirements: Applicants must use an 11 pt Arial font and 1 inch margins; this will be strictly enforced; must be written in English language.  Applications that fail to comply with this format will be returned to the applicant without review.
    19. Grant submission: All applications should be compiled into a single pdf format document that can be read using the Adobe Reader or Acrobat application.  A cover letter providing the title and application type (post-doctoral fellowship, career development grant, etc.) should be emailed to:  research@nephcure.org
