NephCure will periodically feature a different person for you to learn more about who plays a role in the overall success of the foundation and the advancement of kidney disease awareness. From patients to family members to doctors to staff, our intention is to allow everyone to learn more about the people involved in finding a cure for FSGS and Nephrotic Syndrome.

Here, we feature Agnes Fogo, M.D., a researcher, wife and mother. She focuses on understanding the causes of progressive scarring of the kidney, with an interest in finding out hew to stop it and even remodel and reverse some of the scarring to allow kidneys to function better.

Dr. Fogo is a Professor of Renal Pathology and Program Director, Pediatric Center of Excellence in Nephrology  at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, TN.

Q: What would you tell someone who was newly diagnosed with FSGS/Nephrotic Syndrome about your  area of research that would help to inspire hope for their condition?

A: We are excited about  the progress we’ve made in understanding how scarring and other changes progress in animal models of FSGS and other chronic kidney diseases. Our basic research investigates ways that this damage might be stopped or even reversed. This could lead to improved treatments
