Bobby's Story

Bobby's Story
A few years after the birth of my oldest son I decided that it was a good idea to purchase life insurance. I had always been pretty athletic growing up, playing sports and riding my mountain bike, but I wanted the comfort of knowing my family would be taken care of should something bad happen. My best friend had just become an insurance agent so it made sense to apply. Well, needless to say that I was denied for health reasons. I was obviously concerned and saw my doctor right away. Too much protein in the urine. I saw a nephrologist and after several tests and the biopsy, I was diagnosed with FSGS.
At first, I was scared and could not get over the fact that I had this disease. However, I started researching FSGS and learned that my sports hero growing up, Alonzo Mourning, also had this disease that resulted in his transplant. The more I read his inspiring story, as well as the thousands of others, I became more aware that, taking care of myself both physically and emotionally, I could win this battle.
I may have to have dialysis or a transplant at some point in my life. I struggle with fatigue most of the time. Luckily we caught the FSGS in its early stage. I watch my diet, get exercise and take my meds. I now look forward to a long healthy life with my family.
I also know that there are folks living with FSGS or other kidney diseases who are suffering a lot more than I. Having said that, they are all heroes to me, and their courage is inspiration to keep fighting and to make others aware of FSGS and other kidney issues.
