Advocacy
Advocacy is defined as the process of actively showing support and pleading the cause of another. Your involvement as an individual with Nephrotic Syndrome or FSGS, a parent, a family member or volunteer is essential to creating an effective advocacy program. One important method of gaining public attention and support is by presenting issues to Congress. Members of the House and Senate have been elected to represent the residents of their districts and it is important for constituents to tell their legislator how an issue affects the lives of the people they represent. The goal of grassroots advocacy is to develop a good relationship with your elected officials. If they know you, they will know your issues.
You can reach your congressional representative by sending them a letter. Congress most often responds positively to personal stories and requests. In the opening paragraph, clearly identify the issue and purpose of the letter. In the following paragraphs, explain why you are asking the legislator to take specified action. Include in this section, how it impacts the community and any personal stories. The more support for your arguments, the better. Then, ask your legislator for a response in which his/her action is stated. Enclosed you will find several samples of letters to send to your representatives in Congress. Joining in the advocacy effort is an opportunity for concerned individuals to unite as one voice and take an active role in shaping public policy by:
- Educating members of Congress about Nephrotic Syndrome and FSGS
- Encouraging additional research funding that will help find the cause and cure
- Receiving legislative action alerts
- Learning what is happening in Congress
By joining in the NephCure advocacy campaign you will be advocating on behalf of people suffering with Nephrotic Syndrome and FSGS. Everybody can join the movement to raise awareness and funds to save kidneys and save lives.
