On
Wednesday, January 30th, 2008, the National Diabetes and
Digestive and Kidney Diseases Advisory Council convened
for its 176th meeting. This meeting was the first of the
Council’s tri-annual
meetings for 2008.
The Director of the National Institute
of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK),
Dr. Griffin Rodgers, Chaired the meeting and also delivered
the Directors Report. Dr. Rodgers’ Report largely
focused on the recently completed appropriations process
for fiscal year (FY) 2008. He expressed concern that while
the National Institutes of Health received only a modest
increase, NIDDK faired even worse and was essentially level
funded.
At the meeting NIDDK’s annual
research report entitled, Recent
Advancements and Emerging Opportunities was also released,
even though this document is usually not disseminated until
February. Of particular interest to NCF, the 2008 report
includes a section detailing the role of the phospholipase
C epsilon gene (PLCE1) in Nephrotic syndrome.
